In 2005, Iranian composer Nader Mashayekhi was asked to lead the Tehran Symphony Orchestra. He knew the weak position of Western classical and contemporary music in Iran would make this a difficult task. But he took on the challenge, and after having spent several years in Vienna studying, living and working, he returned to his country. As he puts it, "with only one suitcase containing only one thing: my dream to make music in my hometown." Less than two years later he returned to Austria, his suitcase filled with the pieces of his broken dream.
Filmmaker Frank Scheffer captures the passionate composer during rehearsals with young musicians in Tehram, wandering through a desolate desert landscape and a deserted village, looking for inspiration for new compositions and challenging performances, and the back in Vienna as he reflects upon his time in Iran. Political entanglements are only implicit in the film. The director uses beautiful shots in a contemplating setting, in which Mashayekhi's voice sounds like an internal monologue. He reflects on his life and debates the meaning of music and poetry, and his impossible yet unscathed love for his country.

An iconic product of the Mexican Revolution, Redes (1935) combines the talents of a master composer, Silvestre Revueltas , and a master cinematographer, Paul Strand . Its marriage of music and the moving image attains heights of epic grandeur. The co-directors are Fred Zinnemann (en route to Hollywood) and Emilio Gomez Muriel. Because dialogue rarely overlaps music, it is possible to re-record Revueltas' galvanizing score and discover musical riches inaudible on the original monaural soundtrack. As the Redes concert suites by Revueltas and Erich Kleiber omit much, the present recording is the the world premiere of Revueltas' full score, one of the highest achievements in the history of film music.
Throughout his adult life, composer Robert Schumann (1810-1856) struggled against a fear of mental disintegration. His Symphony No. 2 in C Major, Op. 61 was written in 1845 while he was recovering from a breakdown and contains an illustration of how his creative daemons, the heroic, high-spirited Florestan, and the brooding, poetic Eusebius, came into conflict in his music, with its combination of power and intimate lyricism. Focusing on the Second Symphony, this film uses a dynamic interaction between rehearsal footage and dramatized sequences to give a penetrating insight into the composer's complex and fractured genius.

He falls asleep only to awake in another reality, transformed into Master Raro the mediator between Florestan and Eusebius, both played by Simon Callow (Amadeus, Shakespeare in Love) who are at odds over the composition of the Second Symphony.
